News Public to Host Private Reading of Cruz's The Color of Desire A private reading of Nilo Cruz's Cuban-set play The Color of Desire will be held at the Public Theater March 5.

The Color of Desire was initially developed as part of the Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference in summer 2009 under the direction of Wendy C. Goldberg. Goldberg, who is also the artistic director of the Playwrights Conference, will reunite with cast members from the July presentations for the Manhattan reading.

Participating in the reading will be original cast members Alma Cuervo, Maria Cellario, Ivan Hernandez, Rey Lucas, Stephen Schnetzer and newcomer Barbara Robertson.

According to earlier O'Neill press notes for The Color of Desire, "Havana, 1960. As the revolution heats up, a dashing American businessman hires a young Cuban actress for a role unlike any she's ever played: the woman he loved and lost. A vibrant and poetic exploration of the lost love affair between America and Cuba."

Cruz is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Anna in the Tropics, as well as A Bicycle Country, Capriccio, Beauty of the Father, Lorca in a Green Dress. He is also collaborating on the new musical Havana with composer Frank Wildhorn and lyricist Jack Murphy.

On Goldberg's watch, the O'Neill Center has served as the cradle for the plays Spoon Lake Blues, The Receptionist, Durango, Antebellum, Magnolia and The Crowd You Are In With.
