Classic Arts News Rafal Belchacz Wins International Chopin Piano Competition Polish pianist Rafal Blechacz won first prize in this year's International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
The prizes were announced on October 21, after the competition's final round. First prize carries an award of 20,000 euros. The competition began on September 23, and featured 80 pianists from 18 countries.

No second prize was awarded; third prize, a tie, went to Dong Hyek Lim and Dong Min Lim, brothers from South Korea. Fourth prize, another tie, went to Shohei Sekimoto and Takashi Yamamoto, both from Japan. No fifth prize was given; sixth prize was awarded to Ka Ling Colleen Lee, from China.

Blechacz won the competition's three special prizes, for best polonaise, mazurka, and concerto, as well.

According to the BBC News, Blechacz is the first Pole to win the prestigious competition since 1975.
