News Rare Shakespeare First Folio Tour to All 50 States Launches Today
The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is commemorating the 400th anniversary of its namesake’s death by sending out rare original copies of the First Folio of his plays, to be exhibited in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, starting Jan. 4.

Titled First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare, the tour gives Bard fans a chance to see the Folio, printed in 1623, which forms the basis for countless reprints to this day. A complete list of dates and cities appears below.

The Folger promises that "individual copies of this precious book, which is the hallmark of the Folger's collection, will be sent to libraries across the country with an accompanying interpretive exhibition. Theatrical performances and educational initiatives will cluster around the First Folio in local schools and theaters, providing a truly rich experience for anyone who wants the chance to see this historic book and learn more about the Bard."

Of the 233 surviving original copies of the First Folio, the Folger owns 82.

The Washington Post reported that "hundreds of hopeful libraries, museums, historical societies and other cultural venues submitted applications for a chance to host a free four-week display."
