News Rashad to Step Into Dysfunctional Family of August: Osage County Phylicia Rashad, a 2004 Tony Award winner for playing a mother who wants the best for her family in A Raisin in the Sun, will be a mama of a different sort this spring when she steps into Broadway's August: Osage County. Variety reported on March 5 that she'll play vicious, drug addicted matriarch Violet Weston, starting May 26.

Deanna Dunagan won a Best Actress Tony Award for playing the angry truth-tellin' Oklahoma mother who reunites with her three grown daughters when the family patriarch disappears. The Tracy Letts play won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Estelle Parsons currently plays Violet at Broadway's Music Box, and will tour with the play starting this summer. Elizabeth Ashley plays Violet's sister and John Cullum plays the husband who disappears.

Rashad was nominated for a Best Actress Tony for her work in August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean. Her Broadway credits include Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, Cymbeline, Jelly's Last Jam, Into the Woods, The Wiz and Dreamgirls.
