News Razzle Dazzle Dimmed: West End's Love Never Dies and Chicago Close Aug. 27 Two big West End musicals shutter Aug. 27: Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies, his much-anticipated but critically kicked sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, at the Adelphi Theatre, after a run of less than 18 months; and Kander and Ebb's Chicago, after a run of nearly 14 years, currently at the Cambridge Theatre.

They will be respectively be replaced by One Man Two Guvnors, transferring to the Adelphi from the National Theatre; and Roald Dahl's Matilda, transferring to the Cambridge from Stratford-upon-Avon's Courtyard Theatre.

Love Never Dies, which officially opened March 9, 2009, following previews that began Feb. 22, 2009, had originally also set a Broadway premiere for the Neil Simon Theatre for Nov. 11, 2010, but those plans were aborted following the show’s London opening. Original stars Ramin Karimloo (who has played the Phantom throughout the run) and Sierra Boggess (who played Christine) will return to those roles in the original Phantom of the Opera when that show celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special concert staging at the Royal Albert Hall Oct. 1-2. (A revised Love Never Dies is a success in Melbourne, Australia.)

Chicago, recreated in London from the Walter Bobbie-directed production still playing at Broadway's Ambasador Theatre, opened at the West End's Adelphi Theatre Nov. 18, 1997, with a cast led by Ruthie Henshall as Roxie Hart and Ute Lemper as Velma Kelly. It subsequently moved to the Cambridge Theatre in 2006. The final cast at the Cambridge features Sarah Soetaert as Roxie, Amra-Faye Wright as Velma and Jonathan Wilkes as Billy Flynn.

Also shutting on the weekend of Aug. 27-28 are the limited runs of the new musical London Road at the National's Cottesloe Theatre, ending Aug. 27; and the return of Fela! to Sadler's Wells in Bill T Jones's production that originally played in London at the National Theatre last year.
