Roundabout Theatre Company celebrated the official opening of Anna Ziegler’s The Last Match October 24. The new play, directed by Gaye Taylor Upchurch, is about the world of professional tennis, ambition, and the life choices that define us.

The Last Match began performances September 28 in the Laura Pels Theater, which has been transformed into center court at the U.S. Open for the production. The limited Off-Broadway engagement is scheduled through December 23.

The Last Match sees two tennis champions face off for the match of their lives: the semifinals of the U.S. Open. One is Tim Porter, played by Wilson Bethel, the aging all-American favorite; the other is rising star Sergei Sergeyev, played by Alex Mickiewicz.

Mickiewicz and Natalia Payne, who starred in the world premiere at San Diego’s Old Globe, return to the play Off-Broadway; Bethel and Zoë Winters complete the cast.

“Set against the high-stakes backdrop of professional sports, The Last Match serves up a richly theatrical look at what keeps us striving and why,” read production notes from RTC.

Tickets are available by calling (212) 719-1300, online at, and in person at any Roundabout box office.
