Musicals Tonight!, the Obie Award-winning troupe that revives lesser-known shows in concert, invited Musical Mondays Theatre Lab (MMTL) to present work on dark nights at the 45th Street Theatre. MMTL's initial three programs focus on writers who have been through the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop.

Broadway's Rebecca Luker is among performers singing the evening called Jenny Giering and Friends at 6:15 PM May 2. Composer and performer Giering, who penned The Mistress Cycle and Caraboo, is winner of the Jonathan Larson and Fredrick Loewe Awards.

Her work has been performed at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, TheatreWorks/Palo Alto, Barrington Stage Company and The Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Luker is known for Broadway's recent revivals of The Sound of Music, Nine, Show Boat, The Music Man as well as The Secret Garden.

Giering's other performing friends May 2 are Robin Skye (Les Misérables, The New Yorkers), Rachel Ulanet (Flight of the Lawnchair Man, King David), singer-songwriter Michael Arden (Bare), Sally Wilfert (Tom Sawyer, King David, Assassins) and Michael Winther (Mamma Mia!). The 45th Street Theatre is between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. For reservations, call (212) 989-6706 or email Admission is $15.

On May 16, the MMTL evening is a one hour taste of a new musical, The Big Picture, by BMI member composer Barbara Anselmi (with various lyricists). The piece was "a standout feature of the 2004 BMI-Manhattan Theatre Club Showcase," taking "a skewed look at a modern-day wedding."

Musical Mondays was just awarded two grants for the fiscal year 2005-06. The first, from the Lambs Foundation, is for general operating funds. The second is from the Producer-Writer Initiative of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, underwritten by Jamie deRoy and Friends.
