John Logan, the Broadway playwright of Red at the Golden Theatre, is doing rewrites on the hour pilot during these days of New York previews of his play about painter Mark Rothko, he told Playbill.com.

The lead character of "The Miraculous Year," which takes place today, "is a Broadway composer-lyricist so it explores the world of theatre," according to the 50-year –old writer. "His father is a painter, so the art world is explored as well, and his sister lives in upper-class New Jersey. It's a family drama about those three characters.

"I've been thinking about it, and working on it, at the same time I've been working on Red so the two have cross-fertilized in a nice way in terms of dealing with art and dealing with the sometimes-calamitous conscientiousness of being an artist.

"I don't want to say too much because it's all 'in progress,' all speculative, right now, but it should be fantastic. We're casting the pilot now, and we hope to film in June."

This is the first time Logan and Bigelow have worked together, although they have been good friends for 15 years. "We've come close to working together before — we certainly know each other's projects very well because we're so close — but, when it came time to think about a director for this, she's the only person I thought about. "What it is, is that this requires sensitivity, and Kathryn is a deeply sensitive reader of material and a deeply nuanced, delicate worker with actors," Logan said. "When you see her movies, you might think, 'Well, she's a visceral action filmmaker,' and that's one part of Kathryn. The other part is this delicate observer of humanity. This is a family drama. It's all about observing human beings. She's perfect for it."

Logan, who penned the screenplay of "Sweeney Todd," and wrote the play Never the Sinner, will be the subject of Playbill.com's Stage to Screens column on March 27.
