British actors Timothy Dalton and Lynn Redgrave were among the celebrity guests who took part Jan. 26 in a gala Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert. The program, which was conducted by CSO music director Daniel Barenboim, was taped for future broadcast on the PBS Great Performances series; it is tentatively scheduled to air Valentine's Day, 1999.
The program, held in the CSO's newly renovated and much praised Symphony Center, was entitled Star-Crossed Lovers and included selections from Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, Bernstein's West Side Story, Gounod's Faust and Verdi's Othello -- with tenor Placido Domingo and soprano Renee Fleming.
The musical selections were interlaced with dramatic readings (from works by the likes of Shakespeare and Goethe) by Dalton and Redgrave.
