Jacobs' recording of Le nozze di Figaro, which won Gramophone magazine's Record of the Year in October, was nominated both for Best Classical Album and for Best Opera Recording. Jacobs also picked up a second opera nomination for his CD of Scarlatti's Griselda.

The New York Philharmonic's recording of Adams' On the Transmigration of Souls, a Pulitzer Prize-winning memorial for the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks, was nominated for Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, and Best Classical Contemporary Composition. In addition, a recording of Adams' Road Movies by Leila Josefowicz and John Novacek was nominated for Best Chamber Music Performances, and a DVD of his opera The Death of Klinghoffer received a nomination in the Best Long Form Music Video category.

A recording of Higdon's City Scape and Concerto for Orchestra by conductor Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was also nominated in the Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, and Best Classical Contemporary Composition categories (the latter for Concerto for Orchestra). Engineer Jack Renner was nominated in the Best Engineered Album, Classical, category for the CD.

The other nominees for best classical album are the London Symphony Orchestra's recording of Britten's Peter Grimes, conducted by Colin Davis, and a Nashville Symphony disc of works by Elliott Carter.

In the Best Opera Recording category, conductor Emmanuelle HaÇm also received nominations for two recordings: a disc of Monteverdi's L'Orf_o and one of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.

The nominees in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group, are the Bill Charlap Trio for Somewhere; Haynes for Fountain of Youth; the trio of Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette for The Out-of-Towners; the Branford Marsalis Quartet for Eternal, and pianist McCoy Tyner for Illuminations.

Other jazz nominees include rapper-turned-actress-turned-singer Queen Latifah, who was nominated in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category for The Dana Owens Album. Other nominees in this category are Andy Bey, Jamie Cullum, Al Jarreau, and Nancy Wilson.

The winners of the 47th Grammy Awards will be announced on February 13, 2005. Winners in some categories (not including classical music) are recognized in a ceremony broadcast live at 8 p.m. EST.
