Formerly called the Maharam Awards, the prestigious design laurels were given for work during the 1995-96 season.

SCENIC DESIGN: Chris Barreca, Chronicle of a Death Foretold

LIGHTING DESIGN: Jules Fisher/Peggy Eisenhauer, Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk

COSTUME DESIGN: Angela Wendt, Rent

NOTEWORTHY UNUSUAL EFFECTS: Julie Archer for puppets and Karen Ten Eyck for projects in An Epidog (Mabou Mines/Gertrude Stein Rep).

Judges for the awards were theatre critics Tish Dace, Jeremy Gerard, Alexis Greene, Henry Hewes, Jeffrey Sweet and Joan Ungaro.
