PlayBlog Rent Director Michael Greif Talks About the New Off-Broadway Production (Video) Original Tony-nominated director Michael Greif brings Rent back to New York City, this time with a brand-new cast and a newly conceived production. Rent officially made its 2011 Off-Broadway debut Aug. 11 at New World Stages.

"Over the years that I've watched the show, there were things I wanted to change," Greif told Playbill magazine this summer in regards to the current revival. "When we did it internationally or for tours, I made changes. This seemed like a chance for an overhaul."

Here, in a video interview with Playbill, Greif talks about the changes made to Jonathan Larson's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical. Greif explains that the transfer to Broadway with the original production was done very quickly and without much time for change. This time, Greif is able to make the themes of Rent clear to audience members and gives the production a fresh look, complete with new costumes, choreography, projection design and a new set.
