NYC Latine theatre company Repertorio Español will give a U.S. premiere to La Llamada, a jukebox musical from Veneno and Paquita Salas creators Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo. Performances will begin May 3, with opening night set for May 9 at Gramercy Arts Theatre.

The work premiered in Spain in 2013, making the jump to the big screen in 2017. Featuring songs by Dolly Parton, Alberto Jiménez Rodríguez, Juan Luis Giménez Muñoz, and Antonio Manuel Sánchez García, the comedy explores themes of "faith, friendship, first love, and the search for identity, all with a touch of Whitney Houston and electro-Latin energy," according to press notes.

NYC performances, which will be in Spanish with English subtitles, will feature a live band. Repertorio Executive Artistic Director Rafa Sánchez will helm the new staging.

“We are thrilled to present this international success at Repertorio with a fantastic cast and creative team," says Sánchez in a statement. "Los Javis are considered some of the most powerful creators worldwide, and we can’t wait to bring live musical theatre back to Repertorio with such an important project. Our audiences will laugh and fall in love with this beautiful production, and we will prove that it is time to find space in the Off-Broadway season for Spanish speaking musicals with artists from the whole LatinX and Hispanic community. I can’t imagine a better company to do this than Repertorio.”
