George C. Wolfe, producer of the New York Shakespeare Festival/Joseph Papp Public Theatre, will undergo a kidney transplant in March, according to a report in Daily Variety.

Wolfe, who has been getting dialysis treatment for kidney disease, reportedly will complete his upcoming assignment to direct Alec Baldwin and Angela Bassett in Macbeth , with previews starting Feb. 17 and opening set for March 12 in the Martinson space at the Public.

Playbill On-Line was unable to get a confirmation or denial of the Variety story with Wolfe's spokesperson at the Public.

The effect on Wolfe's plans to direct On the Town on Broadway is still up in the air.

Wolfe's brother reportedly will donate the kidney. Wolfe directed Angels in America and Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk, co-wrote Jelly's Last Jam and wrote The Colored Museum.
