Bids for the film rights to the Broadway musical Rent reportedly have topped $5 million and may be headed toward $10 million. The New York Post quoted unidentified sources close to the negotiations saying that bidding among Warner Bros., Universal, Fox, Columbia, New Line, Jersey Films and "a number of independents" has topped $5 million.

The Post quotes co-producer Allan Gordon saying "it's very possible [the rights] will sell for over $10 million."

The story said the most ever paid for films rights to a musical was the $9.5 million paid for Annie.

Rent, which opened off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop and moved to Broadway's Nederlander Theatre in April won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for drama, and the 1996 Tony Award as Best Musical.
