A June 5 Variety story reports that unnamed "insiders" say Sally Field is "being courted" to star in Amazons in August, the new, Broadway-bound play by On Golden Pond author Ernest Thompson.
Produced by Bill Haber and executive producer Kathleen Raitt, Amazons is targeting a late fall or early winter production, assuming that won't conflict with author/director Thompson's duties on a TV miniseries he's shooting.
Asked about the Field rumor, producer Raitt told Playbill On-Line (June 5) "We haven't made an offer to Field, so this is really premature. We're in the crucial packaging phase right now and we'd just prefer not to talk about anyone we're talking to."
Asked to elaborate on the plot of Amazons in August, Raitt said the comedy/drama concerns two women who meet in New York. "One is an actress of a certain age, another is from the midwest, here for medical treatment. They meet and go through hilarious and difficult times. We call it `a comedy of survival.'"
