According to a report in London's Daily Mail, Michael Ball is "in the early stages of negotiations to play the title role," which was originally played on Broadway by Brian d'Arcy James.
Co-producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, the DreamWorks Animation chief, is reported commenting that the "Shrek" films and DVDs have always been popular in the UK, and so the stage version is expected to follow suit. It is also reported that the book and score have been re-written since its Broadway premiere.
The producers, which also include Sam Mendes and Caro Newling's Neal Street Productions, have yet to secure a suitable theatre.
