Tony Awards Reviews: What Are Critics Saying About the 76th Annual Tony Awards?

The 2023 ceremony, which saw historic wins, went completely unscripted June 11.

Another Tony Awards is behind us, with the 76th Annual ceremony held June 11 at United Palace in Washington Heights. Kimberly Akimbo and Leopoldstadt emerged as the season's most-winning musical and play (see the full list of winners here), but what about the ceremony itself? Critics are weighing in—read below to see what they had to say.

A WGA Strike made this year's ceremony especially unique in that it was wholly unscripted. The result was a streamlined ceremony, jam-packed with performances from all of the season's Best Musical and Best Revival of a Musical nominees, along with A Beautiful Noise and Funny Girl, plus 2022 Tony winner Joaquina Kalukango, host Ariana DeBose, and more. This year's awards were also the first to venture quite so far from the actual footprint of Broadway, heading uptown to Washington Heights' United Palace.

Kimberly Akimbo was the most Tony-winning production of the evening, taking five categories. Along with winning for David Lindsay-Abaire's book and Jeanine Tesori and Lindsay-Abaire's score, the production picked up wins for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Bonnie Milligan and Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Victoria Clark.

Leopoldstadt was right behind Kimberly, tying with Some Like It Hot with four wins.

In a historic first for the trans and non-binary community, the awards saw the first-ever wins for openly non-binary performers, in the still-gendered Featured Actor in a Musical and Leading Actor in a Musical categories. Alex Newell took the former for their performance in Shucked, and J. Harrison Ghee won in the latter for their performance in Some Like It Hot.
