News Richard Maltby Jr. to Direct New Production of Closer Than Ever at London's Jermyn Street Theatre Richard Maltby, Jr. will direct a new production of his and David Shire's 1989 song cycle revue Closer Than Ever at London's Jermyn Street Theatre, beginning performances May 6 prior to an official opening May 8, for a run through June 7.



This revised version of the show, with new songs added, was first seen at New York's York Theatre Company in 2012. Now he directs a cast that comprises Graham Bickley, Sophie-Louise Dann, Arvid Larsen and Issy Van Randwyck. The production will feature chroeography by Emily Maltby and musical direction by Nathan Martin. It is being produced by Judy Davies, Kingsley Manning, Richard Stirling and John Yap for Songsmiths Ltd. in association with Jermyn Street Theatre.

According to press materials, Closer Than Ever is a "roller-coaster ride of modern day manners with a focus on the ups and downs of love.  From unrequited adoration to aging, from just-mates to marriage rites, from parenting to passing, each song is a different story told by a different character, a journey into the mind of an individual as he or she faces what it is to be human, to love, to lose, to triumph and to love again."
