Side Show, the musical starring Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner as Daisy and Violet -- Siamese Twins -- may have had a short life on Broadway, but the actresses are certainly getting continued mileage from their pairing. Both received a single Tony Nomination for their connected character(s) in the show, and "Duets," their new CD, will be released Oct. 27 by Varese Sarabande (recently pushed back from Oct. 20). According to spokesperson Jonathan Schwartz (Oct. 20), fans will also have a chance to see the duo in person at two NYC events to promote the album:
Nov. 2, 6 PM: HMV Records (72nd St. & Broadway). Skinner and Ripley will perform songs from the album and autograph disks.
Nov. 15, 9:15 PM: China Club concert (268 West 47th Street; Bway & 8th Ave). The first part will have Ripley singing her original compositions backed by her band. The second half will feature Skinner joining on songs from the "Duets" album. Call (212) 398-3800 for tickets and information.
As for the CD, a number from Side Show is, of course, included -- along with two that were cut from the score.
Varese Sarabande producer Bruce Kimmel told Playbill On-Line that Ripley came to him suggesting a duet disc. Kimmel further focused the project by recommending an album of famous Broadway duets for women. Both Ripley and Skinner liked the notion. The finished album features songs the musicals Rags, Jekyll & Hyde, Bye Bye Birdie, Chess and Chicago.
Following is a song list for the album (all songs are duets, sung by both Ripley and Skinner):
