Rhode Island's Trinity Repertory Company officially open their 1999-2000 season Sept. 8 with Shakespeare tragedy, Othello, playing Sept. 3 - Oct. 10, in a production directed by Amanda Dehnert.

Passion, jealousy, remorse and revenge are featured in the epic tragedy about the famed Moor and his Venetian princess. Dehnert will direct John Douglas Thompson as Othello, Jennifer Mudge Tucker as Desdemona and Eric Tucker as Iago, who conspires to make Othello murderously jealous of his innocent wife.

The season will continue with Shaw's turn-of-the-century views on prostitution will be on display when the company tackles Mrs. Warren's Profession, playing Sept. 24 - Nov. 7 in the downstairs theatre. Artistic director Oskar Eustis will helm the socio-political comedy about an unconventional young woman finding out her mother's dark secret.

Eustis will again delve into skeletons in the closet that may destroy the lives of a younger generation when he directs David Mamet's The Cryptogram, playing December 1999-January 2000. In Cryptogram, a ten-year old boy's world is threatened by the secrets of the adults around him.

And as tradition dictates, perennial audience pleaser A Christmas Carol will be offered during the holiday season. January-March of 2000, has Trinity Rep audiences seeing Irish scribe, Martin McDonagh, visiting the town of Leenane with the Broadway hit, The Beauty Queen of Leenane. In Leenane, Maureen and her mother live in a tiny house in the bleak Irish countryside, tormenting each other relentlessly. Another play in McDonagh's Leenane series, The Lonesome West, opened on Broadway April 27.

Right now, plans are still underway to bring a world premiere to The Rep for a March-April slot, but the decision hasn't been made yet.

The classic Lerner and Loewe musical version of Shaw's Pygmalion, My Fair Lady,, will grace the stage of Trinity Rep for an April-May 2000 slot. In Lady, a poor Cockney flower girl is transformed into the ideal modern woman.

Trinity Rep fave Christopher Durang will have one of his plays one again grace the stages of Rhode Island for the May-June slot. Capping the season will be either Laughing Wild or his latest hit, Betty's Summer Vacation. Durang is the author of The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Beyond Therapy, and Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You.
