Chinese audiences will have a better chance to enjoy Shakespeare's work by watching performances by a world-class theater company-- The Royal National Theater of Britain, which currently tours Hong Kong and comes to Beijing at the beginning of March. Organized by China Foreign Performance and Exhibition Corp., RNT will give three performances of Shakespeare's tragic masterpiece Othello respectively in Beijing (March 6-8) at Beijing Children's Theater and in Shanghai (March 12-14) at the Experimental Theater of Shanghai Academy of Drama, after the current Hong Kong tour.
During their visit, International Exchange Institute of China Foreign Economy and Trade University will sponsor a "Shakespeare Day", from March 3-5, which features a group of activities such as a seminar, a symposium, a joint-recitation and a workshop, etc.. Mr.Peter Holland, Director of the Shakespeare Institute and Professor of Shakespeare Studies, Dept. of English/Universitity of Birmingham, Ms. Barbara Houseman, previously in the Voice Dept. at Royal Shakespeare Company and Mr. Declan Donnallan, Director of Cheek By Jowl Theatre Company, are invited to China by the Chinese Theater Association to give lectures to college students in Beijing, where Chinese Theater Experts and students are looking forward to this special event.
