Playwrights Horizons celebrates the official opening of Mankind January 8. The imaginative new satire is the latest work from acclaimed playwright and director Robert O'Hara (Bootycandy, Bella: An American Tall Tale, Barbecue, In the Continuum, The Brother/Sister Plays).

In Mankind, which began performances Off-Broadway December 15, women have been extinct for over 100 years, men can give birth (but abortion is illegal), and the world is under the control of a police state.

The play, billed as an “audacious, hilarious allegory,“ is scheduled to play through January 28 in the company’s Mainstage Theater.

The cast of Mankind is made up of two-time Tony Award nominee and Emmy and Obie Award winner André De Shields (The Wiz, Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Full Monty, Play On!), Bobby Moreno (Grand Concourse, Fulfillment Center, Lazarus, The Year of the Rooster), Anson Mount (Corpus Christi, Three Sisters, Hell on Wheels), Stephen Schnetzer (Oslo; Wit; The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?), Ariel Shafir (Medea in Jerusalem, Craft, The Pirandello Project), and David Ryan Smith (One Man, Two Guvnors; Passing Strange).

Mankind features scenic design by Tony Award winner Clint Ramos, costume design by Dede M. Ayite, lighting design by Alex Jainchill, original music and sound design by Lindsay Jones, video design by Jeff Sugg, and hair, wig and makeup design by J. Jared Janas and Dave Bova. Production stage manager is Erin Gioia Albrecht.
