News Rock Musical Spring Awakening Blooms in Melbourne Jan. 27 Spring Awakening, the coming-of-age rock musical that swept the 2007 Tony Awards, makes its Melbourne debut Jan. 27 at the National Theatre.

Robert Coates directs the musical by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind. Sater authored the Tony-winning book and lyrics to Spring Awakening, which has music by Grammy and Tony-winning singer-songwriter Sheik.

The young cast, populated by the Young Australian Broadway Chorus, includes Aleksa Kurbalija as Melchior, Liam Maguire as Mortiz, Shannen Chin-Quan as Wendla, Berni Harrison-Goudge as Ilse, Georgia Treu as Martha, Amelia Wilson as Anna, Chloe Wilson as Thea, Wilson Brown as Hanschen, Nikolas Mitchell as Otto, Nicholas Kyriacou as Georg and Rhys James as Ernst.

Ensemble members include Kristen Mihalos, Karissa Taylor, Rachel Lee, Francesca O'Donnell, Veronica Wnuk, Stephanie James, James Leone, Joshua Mulcahy, Mitchell Ralston, Barnaby Reiter and Daniel Ridolfi.

Designing the production are Claude Marcos (set design), Jennifer McKenzie (costume design), Stephen Agisilaou (choreographer) and Matthew Frank (music director).

Spring Awakening received its Australian debut in early 2010 at the Sydney Theatre Company.

Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The original Broadway production of Spring Awakening featured direction by Michael Mayer and choreography by Bill T. Jones.

Songs featured in the Tony-winning score are "All That's Known," "And Then There Were None," "Blue Wind/Don't Do Sadness," "Left Behind," "Mamma Who Bore Me," "My Junk, "The Bitch of Living," "The Dark I Know Well," "The Guilty Ones," "The Song of Purple Summer," "The Word of Your Body," "Those You've Known," "Totally Fucked," "Touch Me," "Whispering" and "The Mirror-Blue Night."
