Broadway News Roundabout Adds Two World Premiere Plays, More to 2022-2023 Season

The works join their season-opening Broadway revival of 1776, set to begin performances this fall.

Roundabout Theatre Company has announced more productions for its 2022-2023 season, including Off-Broadway plays for The Laura Pels Theatre and full Roundabout Underground programming for the Black Box Theatre, both at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre.

The season will feature a previously announced Broadway production of 1776 at American Airlines Theatre this fall. With music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards, and a book by Peter Stone, 1776  is based on a concept by Sherman Edwards, directed by Jeffrey L. Page and Diane Paulus, choreography by Jeffrey L. Page, and music supervision by David Chase

1776 follows John Adams as he attempts to persuade members of the Continental Congress to vote for American independence and what the pursuit of freedom will cost him. The production, direct from the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University, will also include scenic designer Scott Pask, costume designer Emilio Sosa, lighting designer Jennifer Schriever, sound designer Jonathan Deans, and projection designer David Bengali, with orchestrations by John Clancy.

Also coming to the stage in the fall, Noah Diaz's You Will Get Sick makes its world premiere at the Laura Pels Theatre. The new play follows a young man trying to handle a life-changing diagnosis and the journey he goes on with an older woman who helps him break the news to his loved ones.

Following in winter 2023 will be the New York premiere of The Wanderers by Anna Ziegler at the Laura Pels Theatre, which delves into marriage through newlyweds Esther and Schmuli, who are Orthodox Jews, and Abe, a married, Secular Jew whose marriage is challenged by an out-of-the-blue email from a movie star. Barry Edelstein will direct.

In spring 2023, Primary Trust by Eboni Booth will make its world premiere at the Laura Pels Theatre. Under the direction of Knud Adams, the new play will explore the journey of Kenneth, a 36-year-old bookstore worker who must face the world he has avoided when he is laid off.

Roundabout Underground will present two world premieres. In fall 2022, the bandaged place by Harrison David Rivers at the Black Box Theatre will take the stage to present the story of a talented dancer struggling to heal after an assault and his journey to reconcile with his family. David Mendizábal will direct.

Also announced as part of Roundabout Underground, York Walker's Covenant will debut in winter 2023 to share the story of a struggling musician as he returns home to Georgia in this new play which brings folklore, a deal with the devil, and an exploration of the line between rumor and truth into contention against the backdrop of a small town.

Additional Broadway productions will be announced at a later date.
