Rubicon Theatre Will Explore Love and Loss in The Last Five Years | Playbill

News Rubicon Theatre Will Explore Love and Loss in The Last Five Years The Last Five Years, Jason Robert Brown's musical look at a failed relationship, will kick off Rubicon Theatre Company's 2015 season.

Performances of the bittersweet two-hander begin Jan. 21 prior to an official opening Jan. 24 and continue through Feb. 15.

Stephanie A. Coltrin will direct Louis Pardo (Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar) as Jamie Wellerstein and Ashley Fox Linton (Wicked, Les Miserables) as Cathy Hiatt.

The Last Five Years "takes audiences on a journey from elation to heartbreak and from heartbreak to elation," press notes state. "Jamie's story is told chronologically; while Cathy's is told in reverse order. The couple's stories intersect on their wedding day."

"I have been longing to direct a production of this musical since I first heard the original cast CD," Coltrin said in a statement. "The score is thrilling, and with its myriad of contemporary styles, it speaks to both older and younger audiences."

"The story itself is also something we connect to at almost any age," she added. "Most of us recall the sense of exhilaration we felt in the moment we thought we were meeting 'the one.' But we also know that exhilaration can shift profoundly and permanently when one person's life starts moving faster than the other." The Last Five Years premiered at Northlight Theatre in 2001 before playing Off-Broadway in New York at the Minetta Lane Theatre in 2002. It received an Off-Broadway revival in 2013 at Second Stage Theatre. A film adaptation, starring Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick, will open in theatres Feb. 14.

Rubicon Theatre Company is located at 1006 E. Main in Ventura, CA. Tickets and more information are available by calling (805) 667-2900 or visiting rubicontheatre.org.
