Named outstanding lead performers in non-resident productions were Sahr Ngaujah for the national tour of Fela! and Cate Blanchett for a Kennedy Center engagement of Sydney Theatre Company's Uncle Vanya.

The Arena Stage engagement of Edward Albee's Virginia Woolf was named Outstanding Non-Resident Production. It has been announced for a coming Broadway run. Pam MacKinnon directed Tracy Letts and Amy Morton in the revival.

Oscar and Tony Award-winning actor and arts advocate Kevin Spacey received the Helen Hayes Tribute.

The recipient of the 2012 John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company was previously announced: Faction of Fools, the troupe devoted to commedia dell'arte, in residence at Gallaudet University.

The awards administered by theatreWashington address work seen in the year 2011 in theatres in DC and environs, including Maryland and Virginia. The 2012 Helen Hayes Award winners follow.
