Lyrics for the new musical are by Oscar nominee and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Sharon Vaughn.
Theatre Under the Stars, the 47-year-old Texas theatre that specializes in homegrown revivals of classic musicals, the the premieres of new musicals like Jekyll & Hyde, Phantom and Beauty and the Beast, is hosting a staged reading of the new musical under the auspices of its TUTS Underground program to incubate new works. The reading will take place at Zilkha Hall in the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.
The musical is “loosely based” on the life of Jill Conner Browne, who founded the Sweet Potato Queens, a Mississippi-based women’s organization that “promotes self-esteem and positive thinking.” The organization claims to have more than 6,200 chapters in 37 countries. Browne authored a series of books on the concept, starting with Sweet Potato Queens’ Book of Love in 1999, and continuing with books explaining the Sweet Potato Queen approach to weddings, divorces, child-rearing, fitness, cooking, etc.
Tickets must be reserved by March 17. For more information, visit the TUTS website.
