Classic Arts News Russia May Draft Ballet Dancers Russia is considering ending the exemption that keeps members of the famed Bolshoi and Kirov ballet companies out of the army, United Press International reports.
Currently, male dancers in the companies escape the military because of a presidential decree deferring the service of 800 top performers indefinitely.

A spokesperson for the Bolshoi said that the change could cripple the companies, and end the careers of the dancers: "A year in the army without practice would be hard on a musician, but for a ballet dancer it would be next to impossible to return."
