Classic Arts News San Diego Opera Announces 2005-06 Season Featuring Podles, Asawa, Saffer, and Genaux The San Diego Opera will present a new production of Bizet's Carmen, the local premiere of Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto, and revivals of Rossini's Barber of Seville and Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor in 2005-06.
The new Carmen is directed by Lofti Mansouri, longtime general director of San Francisco Opera. Mezzo-soprano Marina Domashenko stars; resident conductor Karen Keltner conducts.

Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt) is presented in John Copley's staging. The star-filled cast includes contralto Ewa Podles in the title role, soprano Lisa Saffer as Cleopatra, mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux as Sextus, and countertenor Brian Asawa as Ptolemy. Kenneth Montgomery conducts.

Tenor Lawrence Brownlee stars in The Barber of Seville as Almaviva; Christopher Maltman is Figaro, and Kirsten Chavez is Rosina. Principal guest conductor Edoardo M‹ller conducts; the production is by Mansouri.

Veteran conductor Richard Bonynge leads Lucia di Lammermoor. Soprano Angela Gilbert sings the title role, with tenor Richard Leech as Edgardo. Andrew Sinclair is the director.
