News San Diego Will See Tours of Spring Awakening, Grease, Color Purple, Dame Edna, Topol in Fiddler Broadway/San Diego, a Nederlander presentation, announced a jam-packed 2008-09 season of shows at the Civic and Balboa theatres in southern California. Tours of Grease, A Chorus Line, The Color Purple, Spring Awakening and Fiddler on the Roof starring Topol are among attractions.

"It is a season of firsts," stated Joe Kobryner, vice president of Broadway/San Diego's parent company, the Nederlander Producing Company of America. "…Spring Awakening is among our first offerings in the newly-restored, gorgeous historic Balboa Theatre. We will also present the first San Diego engagements of two Broadway hits: The Drowsy Chaperone and Oprah Winfrey Presents The Color Purple; and the first week long engagement of the spectacular Beatles concert, Rain: The Beatles Experience."

The 2008-09 Broadway San Diego subscription season includes:

  • Aug. 12-17: The national tour of the new Broadway revival of A Chorus Line, Civic Theatre.
  • Aug. 15-31: The national tour of the 2007 Broadway musical sensation, Spring Awakening, Balboa Theatre

  • Sept. 23-28: The national tour of the Broadway musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, Civic Theatre.
  • Nov. 11-16: A visit by the one-man comedy Defending the Caveman, the longest-running solo play in Broadway history, Balboa Theatre.
  • Dec. 2-7: The national tour of the Broadway musical, The Color Purple, Civic Theatre.
  • March 3-8, 2009: The national tour of the new Broadway revival of Grease, Civic Theatre.
  • April 21-26, 2009: The multi-media theatre show, Rain — The Beatles Experience, featuring hits of the Beatles, Balboa Theatre.
  • May 5-10, 2009: The national tour of the fourth play in the Tuna, TX-set series of comic play by Ed Howard, Joe Sears and Jaston Williams, Tuna Does Vegas, starring Sears and Williams, Balboa Theatre.
  • June 2-7, 2009: The Aussie comedy diva's latest show, Dame Edna Live: My First Last Tour, Civic Theatre.
  • July 14-19, 2009: International star Topol in the classic musical, Fiddler on the Roof, with the star re-creating his film role, Civic Theatre.
  • Aug. 4-30, 2009: A Broadway musical to be announced, Civic Theatre. Extra Season Events in 2008-09 include:

  • Jan. 9-11, 2009: A tour of the musical Annie, Civic Theatre.
  • March 10-15, 2009: The new national tour of Rent, starring original Broadway cast members Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal, Civic Theatre. The previously announced bookings are:

  • June 3-8: A tour of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Cats, Civic Theatre.
  • July 16-Aug. 10: The national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, Civic Theatre. The Civic Theatre is located at 3rd & B Street in downtown San Diego. Balboa Theatre is located at 868 Fourth Avenue, downtown San Diego.
