Though retail stores were reporting a disappointing holiday season, the theatre business boomed in the week between Christmas and New Year's.According to show business newspaper, Variety, Broadway had a record-breaking week, taking in $12.9 million, the highest for the season so far. All 25 shows playing that week showed an increase in receipts from the previous week. Some of the increase was fueled by extra holiday performances, and/or increased prices for New Year's Eve shows.
"Cats" reported the biggest single-week figure -- $702,000 -- in its entire 13-year run. "Smokey Joe's Cafe" and "Victor/Victoria" set house records at their two theatres, $736,000 for "Joe" at the Virginia Theatre, and $854,000 for "Vic" at the Marquis Theatre.
