Tony Goldwyn returns to Broadway in the upcoming production of Network, and the Scandal star visited the Today Show November 9 to talk about it.

Based on the 1975 Oscar-winning film my Paddy Chayefsky, Network comes to Broadway fresh off of an acclaimed run at London’s National Theatre in an adaptation by Lee Hall, directed by Ivo van Hove.

“In 1976 when the move came out, Network was a satire of what was happening in our media culture and it literally has become true,” said Goldwyn. “It’s one of the great American films ... You feel that you're in 1976 but you also feel you're very much here today.”

Turns out, Goldwyn was lying in wait for a stage production of the film. He did a reading of the screenplay two years ago in a benefit for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He read the role of Max, the role he now takes on for Broadway, opposite Aaron Sorkin, whose To Kill A Mockingbird began previews on Broadway November 1. “I read the part I'm doing and I thought, ‘This was made for the stage,’” said Goldwyn. “I thought, 'If this ever comes to New York, let me know.'”

His friend and former co-star Bryan Cranston, who plays Network’s leading man Howard Beale, did just that.

But most thrilling for Goldwyn is working with director van Hove. “What he’s done with video and multimedia in our production, you’re sucked into this world,” Goldwyn added. “It’s incredibly entertaining and shocking and I feel lucky to be a part of it.”

Goldwyn last hit the Broadway stage in the 2010 Broadway revival of musical comedy Promises, Promises as J.D. Sheldrake. After this Broadway run, Goldwyn will appear on Netflix’s new series Chambers, opposite Uma Thurman, expected in Spring 2019.

Network will play Broadway’s Belasco Theatre (111 W 44th Street between Sixth & Seventh Avenues) in a limited engagement run, with previews from November 10, an opening night set for December 6, and closing scheduled for March 17, 2019.
