MCC Theater celebrates the opening of Jocelyn Bioh’s play School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play November 16. The world premiere, directed by Tony winner Rebecca Taichman, marks the professional playwriting debut of playwright and actor Bioh.
School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play is about coming of age at an all-girls boarding school in Ghana in the ‘80s. The play explores themes of beauty, colorism, and adolescence. Performances began November 1 in the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
The cast is made up of Zainab Jah (Eclipsed), Nabiiyah Be (Hadestown), MaameYaa Boafo (Untamed), Paige Gilbert (Street Children), Nike Kadri (The Death of the Last Black Man…), Abena Mensah-Bonsu (Ellis Island’s Ragtime), Mirirai Sithole (The Death of the Last Black Man), and Lortel Award nominee Myra Lucretia Taylor (Familiar).
The creative team includes set designer Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer Jen Schriever, sound designer Palmer Hefferan, and dialect coach Deborah Hecht. Casting is by Telsey + Company.
