News Screening Sondheim Series Will Continue with Sweeney Todd; Louise Guests The Screening Sondheim series at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, which offers screenings of celebrated Stephen Sondheim productions, will continue May 3 at 8 PM.

Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's Sweeney Todd — starring Angela Lansbury and George Hearn — will be shown on a large screen. An interview with Merle Louise, who played the Beggar Woman in the production, will precede the screening. Merle Louise made her Broadway debut in the original production of Gypsy. She created the role of Susan in the original Broadway cast of Company, and her other Main Stem credits include Sweeney Todd, La Cage aux Folles, Into the Woods and Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Considered one of Sondheim's masterpieces, Sweeney Todd originally premiered at Broadway's Uris Theatre on Feb. 6, 1979, with a cast led by Len Cariou (Sweeney) and Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Lovett), who both nabbed Tony Awards for their roles. Harold Prince directed the production, which was awarded the 1979 Tony for Best Musical. George Hearn succeeded Cariou in the production and also joined Lansbury for the show's national tour.

There is no cover charge, but there is a two-drink or $15 food/beverage minimum. The Laurie Beechman Theatre is located within The West Bank Cafe, 407 West 42nd Street. For reservations call (212) 695-6909.
