The Seanachai (Gaelic for "storyteller") Theatre Company will present Brian Friel's Translations at the Theatre Building in Chicago, Jan. 13- Feb. 29, 1999. Friel, widely respected dramatist of Dancing at Lughnasa and Molly Sweeney, is known for his Chekhovian portrayals of rural Irish life. Translations, set in 1833, tells of a young man who returns to his home in Ballybeg with two British soldiers. The soldiers are on assignment to make a new map of Ireland and translate all of the Irish names into King's Good English. The play explores the nature of identity through names and countries.
