Secondhand Lions has a book by Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Curtains) and a score by songwriters Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary. Weiner and Zachary's musical First Date debuted in Seattle last winter in a co-production between the 5th Avenue Theatre and A Contemporary Theatre.
"We are in discussions but we are not yet able to make an official announcement," representatives for the 5th Avenue told Playbill.com. Warner Bros. Theater Ventures is involved, according to Variety.
The musical received a New York reading earlier this year.
Tim McCanlies wrote and directed the film that centers on Walter, the teenage son of a flighty, floozy mother who, before setting out in search of a husband, deposits the boy on the doorstep of his mysterious great uncles Hub and Garth. While spending the summer with the two men, he learns what the duo did with their time when they disappeared for a long while during their youth.
