The upcoming drama is adapted from the stage trilogy that includes The Father, which made its Broadway debut in 2016.

Sony Pictures has released the teaser trailer for The Son, from director and playwright Florian Zeller. The upcoming drama, based on a play trilogy that includes The Father, will star Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, and Anthony Hopkins

The story follows a hybrid family struggling to support their teenager during a mental health crisis. After the birth of their first child, Peter and Beth open their doors to Nicholas, Peter's son from a previous marriage who is struggling with depression.

Vanessa Kirby, Zen McGrath, and Hugh Quarshie also star.

Zeller directs a script adapted by Christopher Hampton (reuniting from The Father) with cinematography by Ben Smithard and editing by Yorgos Lamprinos. Jackman executive produces alongside Simon Gillis, Philippe Carcassonne, Daniel Battsek, Ollie Madden, Lauren Dark, Peter Touche, Christelle Conan, Hugo Grumbar, and Tim Haslam. Zeller serves as a producer with Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Christophe Spadone, and Joanna Laurie.

The movie will drop November 11, following its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival September 7.

The preceding adaptation, The Father, was released in 2020 and received six Academy Award nominations. Zeller won for Best Adapted Screenplay, which he shares with Hampton, and Hopkins (who led the movie) for Best Actor. The work made its Broadway debut in 2016, with star Frank Langella winning a Tony Award for his performance.
