Claiming at the time that she couldn't bear to watch her first marriage to lyricist Gerry Goffin fall apart on stage, King skipped the Jan. 12, 2014, Broadway opening. She changed her tune April 3 of that year when she appeared on stage for the show's "Easter Bonnet" appeal, after which she embraced the show.
The Guardian reported that King paid tribute to Goffin at the London premiere. “Gerry Goffin passed away on 19 June of last year. He did get to see the opening night in New York and he was really happy, he really loved the show,” King said.

The musical, which was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Musical on Broadway, also recounts King's friendship with fellow songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. The pair joined King on stage at the Aldwych Theatre for the curtain call.
