Off-Broadway's wild project has revealed casting for its upcoming run of Cyrus Aaron's Coping Mechanism, beginning performances September 27 ahead of a September 29 opening night. The limited run will continue through October 21 at the Off-Broadway company.
The cast will include Eric Ruffin as Nathan, DeShawn White as Lindsie, Gerrard James as James, and Jes Washington as Debra. Casting is by Helene Galek.
The work centers on Debra Clayborne, who is invited to complete her son's unfinished project a year after his murder. The work originated as a ten-minute play for The Flea Theater's Flea Fridays in 2017.
Tramane Harris is directing, leading a creative team that includes lighting designer Amina Alexander, scenic designer Alex Jourdan, prop designer Samantha Tutasi, costume designer Gina Ruiz, and sound designer Sean Hagerty.
"I believe this production is the vulnerable art we need, but don't quite know how to ask for," shares Aaron. "I don't want people to come in expecting a play about grief to be sad. Sure, sadness is a part of the grieving process, but I think Coping Mechanism is genuinely about human relationships and how much our livelihood depends on them. We're all fragile, and trying to clean up the mess in our lives the best we can."
