The principal cast of the Alicia Keys musical Hell's Kitchen will reprise their performances from the musical's 2023 Off-Broadway world premiere for the upcoming Broadway bow. Inspired by the Grammy winner's life and featuring a score of her songs, the musical begins previews March 28 at the Shubert Theatre ahead of an April 20 opening night.
Newly announced for the Broadway cast are Shoshana Bean (Wicked) as Jersey, Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton) as Davis, Kecia Lewis (Ain't Misbehavin') as Miss Liza Jane, Chris Lee (Hamilton) as Knuck, and Maleah Joi Moon as Ali. Lee and Moon will each make their Broadway debuts.
Hell's Kitchen features music and lyrics by Keys, a book by Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz, and choreography by Tony nominee Camille A. Brown. Tony nominee Michael Greif is at the helm. The production also features music supervision by Adam Blackstone, orchestrations by Tom Kitt and Blackstone, arrangements by Keys and Blackstone, music consulting by Kitt, and music direction by Lily Lang.
Inspired by Keys' own life, the musical follows 17-year-old Ali and her mother, sharing a cramped apartment near Times Square. Ali wants to live out her NYC dream, but Mom is scared her daughter will repeat her own mistakes.
The full creative team includes scenic designer Robert Brill, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer Natasha Katz, sound designer Gareth Owen, projection designer Peter Nigrini, hair and wig designer Mia Neal, makeup designer Michael Clifton. Casting is by Heidi Griffiths and Kate Murray, and general management is by Foresight Theatrical. Danny Maly is the production stage manager.
