San Francisco's Magic Theatre is staging the West Coast premiere of Gum. Previews started April 21 for an opening April 27 and a run through May 23. Written By Karen Hartman, Gum had its world premiere at Baltimore's Center Stage earlier this year.

Gum takes place in an unnamed country where women are forced to wear veils and are truly oppressed. The play follows two sisters, when the older discovers such Western pleasures such as rock music, cigarettes and Juicy Fruit. As the play develops, the items become sexual metaphors, and the subjects of taboo and secrecy are explored.

Directing the show is Jean Randich, who recently finished the staging of He Who Says Yes; He Who Says No at NATCO in New York. The Gum cast also includes Helen Shumaker, Laura Flanagan, Esperanza Catubig, Bill Billingslea and Omar Metwally.

Tickets to Gum are $18-32 and available by calling (415) 441-8822.
