On October 20, PBS' Great Performances welcomes She Loves Me to its roster of broadcast Broadway productions.
The 2016 revival from Roundabout Theatre Company was captured and streamed live by subscription streaming service BroadwayHD on June 30, 2016. It marked the first live stream of a Broadway production in history.
Nominated for eight Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical, the production starred Laura Benanti (who earned a Tony nod for her performance) as Amalia Balash, Zachary Levi (who earned a Tony nod for his performance) as Georg Novak, Jane Krakowski (who earned a Tony nod for her performance) as Ilona Ritter, and Gavin Creel as Steven Kodaly. The original cast also featured Byron Jennings, Michael McGrath, Nicholas Barasch, and Peter Bartlett.
With a book by Joe Masteroff, music by Jerry Bock, and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, the new staging was directed by Scott Ellis (nominated for a Tony for the revival) and opened at Studio 54 March 17, 2016. The show featured choreography by Warren Carlyle, scenic design by David Rockwell (who won a Tony for his work), costume design by Jeff Mahshie (who was nominated for a Tony for his work), with lighting design by Donald Holder, sound design by Jon Weston, and new orchestrations by Larry Hochman (who was also Tony-nominated for his work on this production).
She Loves Me tells the story of two parfumerie clerks who, unknowingly, are corresponding with each other as anonymous pen pals, but butt heads incessantly at work. The musical was adapted from the play Parfumerie by Miklós László, which also inspired the movie You’ve Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.
The broadcast of She Loves Me airs October 20 at 8 PM ET on PBS. Check your local listings.
