Mol is the latest to portray merry murderess Roxie Hart in the Tony-winning Kander and Ebb musical at the Ambassador Theatre. She joins a company that includes Donna Marie Asbury as Velma Kelly, John Mineo as Amos Hart, Debbie Gravitte as Matron "Mama" Morton and D. Sabella as Mary Sunshine. James Naughton, who originated the role of Billy Flynn to Tony-winning effect in this revival, returns to the company Jan. 6 for a limited engagement through Jan. 25.
Gretchen Mol recently had a cameo role (via video) in MCC's Intrigue With Faye; she also played in the Off-Broadway and London stagings (and the subsequent film adaptation) of Neil LaBute's The Shape of Things. The actress, who has appeared in such films as "Rounders," "Cradle Will Rock," "The Thirteenth Floor" and "Donnie Brasco," has also been seen on stage in Bus Stop, No Exit, Godspell, An Actor's Nightmare and 110 In The Shade.
Chicago won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 1997 as well as awards for actors Bebe Neuwirth and James Naughton, director Walter Bobbie, lighting designer Ken Billington and choreographer Ann Reinking. The original production was directed and choreographed by the late Bob Fosse.
