Congratulations to S.M. Shephard-Massat, of Smyrna, GA, whose play, Waiting To Be Invited, won Delaware Theatre Company's "CONNECTIONS" playwriting contest. DTC will read the winning script next season, and Shephard-Massat will take home $10,000 for her efforts.
Two runners-up, White Noise by Gino DiIorio; and The Park Keeper, by Charles Benjamin Bartley, will also get cash awards.
Waiting To Be Invited is a lighthearted look at the Civil Rights movement, as three middle-aged, African-American women in 1960s Atlanta insist on eating at a department store's lunch counter.
Shephard-Massat, an alumnus of NYU's prestigious Tisch School Of The Arts Dramatic Writing Program, has also penned Liberation, which will be produced by Atlanta's Academy Theatre next year.
Delaware Theatre Company established the CONNECTIONS prize in 1993 to encourage playwrights to address "issues of interracial dynamics on the stages of American regional theatres." --By David Lefkowitz
