Part of the Ars Nova Summer Fling series, the show opened July 31 following preview performances that began July 19. Upon closing, Shida will have played 12 previews and 36 regular performances.

A touring production of Shida is being planned, as well as a possible return engagement in New York.

"We are so grateful to the audiences who have come to support the Off-Broadway run of Shida this summer, as well as the incredible team who helped bring this production to life," Bayardelle and director Andy Sandberg said in a joint statement. "We look forward to the future life of Shida as we continue to tell this inspiring true story around the country and around the world."

Bayardelle also stars in Shida. Her Broadway credits include The Color Purple and Hair, and she received the NAACP Theater Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her performance in The Color Purple.

"Shida is based on the true story of a young African-American girl who aspires to become a writer, tracing the ups and downs of her family, friendships, and love life — from the double-dutch court at St. Mary's Catholic School in the Bronx to a scholarship at NYU," press notes state. "Her dreams become sidetracked by hardship and loss until her faith and those closest to her combine to restore Shida's hope and give her a second chance."

Shida features scenic design by Charlie Corcoran, lighting design by Grant Yeager, costume design by Michael McDonald and sound design by David Sanderson. Musical direction is by Jesse Vargas. Music supervisor is Larry Lelli. Alexander Orbovich is general manager.

Shida is presented by Shida Productions LLC, Flora Major, Gary Goddard Entertainment, Brian Wagner/Adam Lederer, and Whitney Hoagland Edwards, as an Ars Nova Summer Fling.
