Shirley MacLaine Joins Cast of Live Action Little Mermaid | Playbill

News Shirley MacLaine Joins Cast of Live Action Little Mermaid It's a separate project from the Chloë Grace Moretz Little Mermaid shooting at Universal.

Things are getting a little crowded "under the sea."

Film star and Broadway legend Shirley MacLaine was announced to co-star with Poppy Drayton and Loreto Peralta in a new live-action film titled A Little Mermaid, based on the 1837 Hans Christian Andersen tale The Little Mermaid, being shot by the newly-formed MVP Studios, according to Variety.

The project is separate from another live-action Little Mermaid being shot by Universal, starring Chloë Grace Moretz (30 Rock, Kick-Ass) as the title character.

Both tell the story of a young mermaid who longs to give up her undersea life when she falls in love with a human prince.

Aside from the subject matter, neither movie project has any connection with the 1989 Disney film or the 2008 stage musical of the same title.

According to Variety, in the MVP project Peralta will portray "a young orphan who discovers a beautiful and enchanting creature (Drayton), who she believes to be the real 'Little Mermaid.' MacLaine plays an eccentric woman who has intimate knowledge of the story." Shooting is expected to begin in March. No release date was reported.

MacLaine started her career as a Broadway dancer, and was scouted as a movie star when she filled in as understudy to the leading lady in the musical The Pajama Game. She subsequently starred in many Hollywood films, including the musicals Can-Can, Irma La Douce and Sweet Charity.
