According to the New York Post, the musical had a recent invitation-only workshop at London's Soho Theatre, which Cowell attended and told the cast and creative team that he will invest in the project. He will co-produce with Stage Entertainment. The budget for the musical is $16 million, and Cowell hopes to bring the work to the Palladium Theatre and eventually transfer The X Factor to New York.

The X Factor Musical features a score by Steve Brown and book by Harry Hill. Song titles include "Falling in Love With Myself," a second-act ballad for the character of judge Simon Cowell, who was played by Alexander Hanson (A Little Night Music) in the workshop.

The musical will focus on a woman who comes from the trailer park, yet is "blessed with a Susan Boyle-type belt," and auditions for "The X Factor."
