News Singer Alanis Morisette Joins The Exonerated Cast Off-Broadway, Dec. 2-7 Songstress Alanis Morisette who lent a hand to friend and Jane Eyre composer-lyricist Paul Gordon for the Broadway run in 2001, will now lend her talents to the Off-Broadway staging of The Exonerated.

Morisette is slated to join the rotating cast of the Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen work Dec. 2-7, according to the company's website. Bob Balaban (the actor seen in "A Mighty Wind") directs The Culture Project presentation at the 45 Bleeker Theatre.

The singer has some acting credits, including the movie "Dogma," the children's television series "You Can't Do That on Television" and a stint in Off-Broadway's Vagina Monologues. Morissette is best known for her songs "You Oughta Know," "Ironic," "Hand in My Pocket," and "Uninvited."

The Canadian singer-songwriter donated $150,000 to the Broadway run of Jane Eyre in 2001 after the show had announced its closing date of May 20. The gift allowed the show to run an additional week during the Tony Award voting period. Producers were subsequently able to keep the show going even longer before finally ending its run June 10, 2001.

Drawn from interviews of forty former death row inmates by playwrights Blank and Jensen, The Exonerated explores the variety of experiences and feelings of those who spent from 2 to 22 years imprisoned only to be later by found innocent and release.

The production has raised $300,000 in donations in its first year for the six exonerees, portrayed in the play, who received no remuneration after being released from prison. The work has garnered a number of awards including a Lucille Lortel Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Drama Desk Award. The Exonerated is produced by The Culture Project, Dede Harris, Morton Swinsky, Bob Balaban, Allan Buchman, Patrick Blake, David Elliott, Jane Bergere, Ruth Hendel and Cheryl Wiesenfeld.
