About the upcoming convention, Mabel Mercer Foundation Executive Director Donald F. Smith said in a statement, “Chicago has always been one of the preeminent cities in the world in terms of its appreciation for music. The audiences in Chicago were wonderfully enthusiastic during our earlier appearances; the people there seem to hold a special affection and affinity for the great popular songs of Broadway and Hollywood, whether classics by George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin — the more contemporary numbers by Stephen Sondheim and Jerry Herman — or the brand-new offerings from the young composers and lyricists of today. Cabaret is now one of the very few places those remarkable melodies and words can be heard . . . As a result, we’ve repeatedly been asked to bring back the Convention to Chicago. With that kind of demand, we’re delighted to once again showcase this material locally, along with the performers who specialize in performing it.”
